Malus domestica M26
The M.26 is a semi-dwarfing rootstock that was introduced in 1929 in England and is widely used in modern fruit production. It produces medium-sized trees that are larger than those on M9, but still compact enough for manageable orchard systems. The M26 induces early bearing and is known for its high productivity, especially when used with spur-type apple varieties.
The M26 rootstock performs best on well-drained, fertile soils and benefits from regular irrigation during dry periods due to its relatively shallow root system. It is moderately winter hardy but less tolerant of extreme cold compared to more vigorous rootstocks like A2. Because of its growth habit, young trees require staking during the first years to ensure stability and proper development.
Thanks to its balance between vigor and size control, M26 is highly suitable for intensive planting systems, as well as for cordons, espaliers, and container growing. Malus domestica M26 is valued for its reliable yields, early fruiting, and adaptability in smaller gardens and commercial orchards alike.
Product specification
Malus domestica M26 is best suited for high-density planting systems where moderate vigor and early cropping are required. Recommended planting distances are closer than those of vigorous rootstocks, depending on training system. The rootstock performs optimally in well-drained soils and should not be planted in wet or poorly drained conditions due to its susceptibility to crown rot. Additional care is needed to manage burrknots and ensure proper tree support during establishment.
